I am trying to fit a head unit into my vn.
i connect up
perm power (yellow) and switched power (red)
and i cant get anything on the head unit to light up.
so i thought that earth (black) might need to be connected too, so i hook that up still nothing.
im a novice at this but i think with just those 3 things connected it should work right? (although i see an absence of a negative terminal in this senario but nowhere ive read about says anything about that)

so in my thinking it would either be a problem with the power or a problem with the headunit ... so this is what i did.

i took the light bulb from the overhead light inside the car, i hooked each end up to some speaker wire, i ran one end to the negative terminal of my battery and i touched the other end on the following and got the following results.

touched onto perm power - light lit up ... good
touched onto switched power - light did not light up ... bad

i tried this with
a) no ignition
b) reds on
c) engine running

and each time i got the same result ... which tells me that the switched power is not getting any power to it ... am i right??

so i thought that if i connected the perm power from the car (which is working fine) to both perm power and switch power on the head unit, then i would have power 100% of the time without even having to switch the car on ... this did not work.

on the head unit i have ...

perm power (yellow)
switch power (red)
earth (black)
front speakers +/- (various greys x4)
rear speakers +/- (purple and green)
???? - a blue and white cable ... dunno what this is

I also have a male plug that sort of looks like it should be the antenna but i dont think thats relevant atm.

look i hope i havent rambled too much but thats what ive done so far and still nothing.

the only questions i can think of are ...
1)do i need to have the earth (black) connected to have power and illumination to the head unit
2)should i have a negative terminal somewhere?
3)could it be a fuse problem?? ... note that my aircon and heater is also not working.

i cant think of any other questions ... please feel free to suggest anything you think might help.

thanks alot guys.

just an update ... i found the fuse box and found that the radio power fuse is out ... replaced it (20 watts) and still not working
i tested the switched power and perm power ... both working fine now.
and i earthed it aswell to the chasis.
my summation is that the head unit is stuffed.

First up, yes you need the black (earth) connected to a metal part of the dash.

I'll keep thinking about things, see what else I can come up with.

Get your hands on another h/u and test it out. If you can get the other h/u to work, then I'd say that your h/u is boned.

Keep in mind that when hooking all this stuff up, the first connection should be the earth, the LAST connection should be the +12VDC cable.

I blew 4 fuses before I worked that out

I found it easier to take the fuse out until all wired up then put it back in.

There's more than just your fuses at stake. Even with the fuse pulled, you should still wire up the earth first.
