Possibly on its way out but I would start with a good service first. Change the oil and filter possibly even try a flush.

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.

This could be caused by the old oil being a bit sludgy causing your problems. Once it warms up it will thin out and appear to be working fine.
Have you serviced the tranny since you have owned the car??
What color is the oil??

i had the same problem when i had a auto it would take about 5 min to get into reverse when cold, i would shake the car and it would sometimes click into gear, once i did a service on it new filter,fluid-flushed it right out then replaced it after i did that mate it went fine for about 6 months until 2 gear just wouldn't work due to burnouts

That oil sounds fine but before forking out for a tranny I would be giving it a good service including flush and filter and new oil making sure it is at the correct level when done.
