Can someone tell me what the general 'life' is of the stock standard VN computer? Mate reckons he has had to replace another, makes 3, while my car still has original.
I'm thinking, rightly or not, that he is getting the light to check the fault codes and panicking???

I still have the originals in both of my VN's and never had an issue.
Have not heard of many failing to be honest.
Is your mate actually checking the codes to see what they are??

| A lot of factors involved. If it lives its life in a clean and waterproof shed, and only driven on bright sunny days the short answer would be "a very long time." If it's ever been dunked in water, obviously a hell of a lot less. There's an infitnitely variable difference between the two. I've seen a VN dunked up to the bottom of its windscreen in water, and besides screwing up the electrics, it has one other unusual side effect. For reasons I don't understand, the shock of being dumped in this much water made it fill the sump full of fuel. Luckily drowning the ignition had already stopped the engine, but it's the weirdest thing I've ever seen a VN do. |

| Cheers, mine lives a bit of a rough life. Dirt roads and sometimes creek crossing. His lives in town. Told him he was a numpty for not checking for fault codes. |

| Mainly if you can keep the engine harness and engine computer free of dust, mud and water, it won't give you much trouble. I forget what the code is for it, but if yours starts showing error codes, the one most likely to cause trouble is the oxygen sensor. It's a metal connector on the left bank of the exhaust. 9 times out of 10, error codes are for faulty sensors |
