g'day guys I'm back again, the VN was going real flash until last night, I parked it in the driveway and it was all good until I went to KFC, got back and parked it in the carport.

next thing I wake up this morning drive out the driveway and leave a massive trail of auto oil, it's still changing gears fine and I've tried everything and can't get it to leak again, it appears to of been coming out of the bottom of the inspection plate, I'm a little bit worried about driving it again.

so any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks

Do you have oil in the auto, what does the dip stick say??? Or have you already re-filled it??

Auto oil is also used in the power steering. I have had the seal blow and the power steering oil come out the boots.Just a thought.

A power steering leak will show itselfaccording to temperature. If your car sits on its bum all day in a cool area and has a leak, you will notice a pool of oil under the steering rack, usually right below where the steering shaft joins. If the power steering pump is empty, it will make a groaning noise like the power steering pump in the F-Series utes, and the XA/B/C/D/E or XF Falcons.

Same goes for your transmission. A leak is more likely to show itself if the car sits idle in a cool place. The gaskets, when not exposed to oil will often shrink a little, compromising the seal. Clean the floor of your garage/shed and put down a piece of sheetmetal, preferably one with a mirror finish. This will help you figure out exactly where the leak is. There are four main places they can leak: Rear mainshaft (where driveshaft connects) front mainshaft (main bearing seal behind bell housing) Cooling lines at the transmission, and cooling lines at the radiator. Go through them all and when you find it, degrease everything, let it sit idle for 24 hours and then drive around the block. Park on the drip tray and see what happens.

To my knowledge it's accessible without having to take the back of the gearbox out, and can be removed from the outside. Putting the new one in is as simple as lining the seal up to the lip, and using a socket or something round and tube shaped to gently tap the new one into place around the rear shaft
