hello in reply about your subs and amps i hav 3 amps and 3 12 inch subs hooked up in my VN and you can tell when you lose a sub starigth away. best way is to disconnect your subs and run them one at a time that way you should be able to tell which sub isnt working properly. if they both work but 1 or both sound crackly or keep cutting out check that the coils havent been burnt out. also wat size amp do u ahve and what is the power of your subs. |

Chuck a multimeter across the output for the subs and see if you've got a non-zero voltage. Then disconnect them and test the resistance of the voice coils on the subs (should be either 1, 2 or 4 ohms).
@cwitifa23: 3x12" subs? That's awesome. Have you got any pictures of that? More to the point what sort of SPL does that generate? |

The easy way to check to see if it is a heat issue it to keep it cool and run it like you normally would to make it cut out. Keeping it cool can be the tough bit though. If it's in the boot, turn the system on and just have a fan blowing air into the boot and over the amp to keep it cool.
Where exactly is the amp mounted? If it's set into a false floor heat can build up damn fast and wipe out an amp really quick. Find a spot with really good air flow and test it out.
I still say chuck a multimeter over each output to measure the voltage to find out which channel is really dead. Maybe you've got a dodgy speaker on your hands.

I did actually mean that you'd just sit there at home with the boot open and a fan aimed in (you know, one of those crap bunnings $10 ones).
As to why one channel drops and not the other. Maybe it's the amps way of protecting itself from heat issues. Maybe it's just a **** amp.
That said, it could be anything inside the amp that's causing the drop-out, from dodgy connections (dead solder joints), through to a transformer that's dead/dying. In times like this it's usually easier to get a new amp. Pick another one up from somewhere like JB or Strathfield during a sale. |

Good AND cheap? Didn't know such a thing existed.
If it's just gotta be a little crappy 2ch setup, head down to your local audio store and pick up any little 2ch amp for as little $ as possible. If it's gotta be a good amp then I'd suggest having a look around a few websites (JVC, Kicker, Fusion, Sony, Kenwood...) and just see what specs you're after.
It all depends on how much you want to spend. Every now and then a JB store has a 2ch amp on sale for dirt cheap. I'm in the middle of a boot install at the moment and I'm just buying up all the gear I need. I'm decking the whole thing out with Fusion amps/speakers. Their 'bargain' 2ch amp is http://www.fusioncaraudio.com/products.php?action=view&product_id=84
I don't know what the price of that one is though. Sorry.
Another thought is...if your head unit has rear speaker output just drive the 6x9's from the head unit until you do manage to find a good amp. Even my ****ty stock head unit manages to get the rear view mirror shaking. And that's JUST from the 6x9's as my car is without subs for the time being. |

| yeah the 3 x 12 inch work awesome. previously had sony gear just deckd out in pioneer had severe trouble with coils on sony subs. bout Pioneer DEH-P 9650MP HU motorised face and some serious power. SPL not sure of gettin it re tested but will take some pics of new set up for you. hav one 1200 watt sub facing inside through fold down seat and 2 x 1000watt pioneer subs in boot facing backwards, not much room in there though. there run by 2 8oowatt amps and a sony 300 watt amp as a backup. well over the 120DB mark |

| if your are chasin cheap amps look for avalanche amp 800 or 1000watt models. ppl might laugh but i had 2 of them running 3 subs for 4 years and they never gave me trouble. of course they will overheat if you overcrowd them but pretty reliable RRp usually $140 to $200 but they might be hard to find now. Boss AUdio are also okay for cheaper model amps and threy come with heaps of power. |
