Hi all, Being new on the forum, & the fact that I have a few problems to sort through (with the Calais), I thought it would be a tad easier to start a topic where people could answer my individual questions, or post a link to the relevant topic.
1991 VN Calais V6 History My (former) partner drove my car home one-day, & the motor would not restart. As I believed the motor to be seized, I stripped the interior, as the carpets were mouldy due to faulty door seals. This was circa 2003. In 2004, I had some time off, & decided to check the motor- I took the spark plugs out, & tried to turn it over manually- I succeeded. It turns out the alternator had seized. A replaced alternator saw the car fire up first time. Skip to Feb 2008- I decided after years of in-action to get the car back on the road. I engaged a motor trimmer to put new felt & carpet in, plus re-install the interior. The car was then taken to a dual mechanic/auto electrician (these guys were superb- am happy to refer Adelaide people to this company, PM me for details). They replaced the fuel pump, & another component related to the fuel pump. They changed the fluids in the radiator, transmission, engine & brakes. I drove the car out of the repairers home, making it the first time it had been driven in 5 years.
Now that it's back on the road, I'm still looking to do a few things to the vehicle.
list of parts still needed Parcel shelf front left skirting board (?) interior light cover front grill (may be looking to put a HSV grill) front light *if people could advise me of prices these items should be, that'd be great*
list of problems gauges stuck/work intermitently (have read the relative topic) fuel injector seals need replacing (as advised by mechanics) rear brakes could not be serviced (reason was given to me), I now suspect they may have seized/not be working properly (is this a common problem?) power steering is not what it should be (definate leakage), would this require some serious work? tinting has deteriorated (easy enough to get that done)
I would like some hints & tips on lowering the vehicle performance chips/cams/exhaust systems (beefing up the motor) alarms
I have had the car re-sprayed, maintaing the original maroon/burgundy over silver. I've left the badges off, have new VT slate grey carpet. I have a sound system ready to be installed into the car- sub-woofer, amplifier, & 3 pairs of speakers (looking to add the extra set to the front doors, & have been advised to get VR door trims- is this necessary?)
Any help is appreciated.

hey mate welcome to the site.
Parts u need for your car... prices vary so much but i rekon cheapest way would be to find someone wrecking a vn and go remove the parts u want and ask him wat he wants. Wat you have listed is all very easy to take off. No more than a hundred bucks for all that either id say. If u cant get a parcel shelf make one.. theres a how to on justcommodores.com i think.
Fuel injector seals... not hard to replace and i would do them sooner rather than later. If u need to no how to take them out i can do a quick description for u.. but its very easy. Seals are only $2 each for memory. And when u put them in make sure to use some lube. U may as well check all ur EFI hos well as they do crack if they are old.
Brakes.. no idea man. Everything on cars can be fixed or replaced so take it to someone else haha. Some parts on cars can sieze after not being used in a long time but im not sre on brakes.
Power steering is a very common prob.Mine leaks alot.. i just keep toppin it up when it needs it. But u can try stop leak. or if u have money replace it. Sometimes its a 50cent O ring doin all the leaking...
Lowering.. how low u wanna go? got mags? id say a package is the best bet. Whiteline or king springs are good. I dont have my car that lowered because i dont wanna worry about speed humps.. Lowering all comes down to personal choice, and ur budget!!!
chips, cams, exhuast... money money money? how much u wanna spend. i know quiet a few diff set ups around. Exhuast is simple, 2.5" is best with a high flow CAT and extractors plus Y pipe. You should also get CAI and KN filter.. make intake a little better. Some ppl use a V8 throttle body but only makes the throttle a tiny bit more responsive but if your car is like mine taking off in the wet is hard enough haha. Tell us wat power u want and how much u want to spend and we can be a bit more specific...
Alarms: I have a key kill switch on my car. Flick it and no one can start the car, they can turn it over until it runs out of battery, unless they no how to disconnect it obviously, but they have to find it first ;) In a VN a kill switch and an alarm is best, because face it they r easy to get into. Immobilisers can be bypassed by 2 pieces of wire and a fuse... U can even set up your own kill switch urself with a switch and some wire.
And no u dont need the door trim just the speaker pods. U can get away with audio shop ones if the spacer is wide enough (i have them) and they work fine. 6 Speakers tho?? Just put some in front door and on parcel shelf. Original front holders are tiny and pretty much only good for tweeters (if that). Do u no how to install amps and all that? it saves u alot of money if u did it urself.. i did mine and it wasnt that hard. Runnin wires so they arnt seen is the hardest bit.
Hope some of this is helpfull lol |

| if the car hasnt been driven for a while caliper are known to seize, you can get the caliper off but hard to get back on, or the mechanic may of compressed the calipers piston unevenly |
