hey guys im here on behalf of my mum and like most women she doesnt know much about cars me being young and into cars ive landed myself the job of replacing the crank angle sensor on her VN Yay for me
anyways cut the crap i can pick a second handy up for about 10 bucks but just wondering if im better off getting a new one and some rough prices
and how is the actual job if anybody has done it am i better off telling her to take it to the mechanics ripoffbastards
any help will be greatly appreciated thanks in advance george
Call your local parts stores mate. Prices will vary... plus not everyone will have it in stock most likely. Let us know what they say and someone will let you know if you're being stitched up or not. As for second hand or new- personally I'm in the new camp unless you know what you're looking for as to the condition of a new item.
You're never better of taking it to the mechanics unless you are way out of your depth or its brakes IMO- give it a go an learn something new. Calling them rip offs won't get you far though... we've got some tradies on board who probably won't appreciate it.
yeah i understand mate...ripoffs was implying that the companies rip you off holden quoted over 400 dollars to do this as im actually becoming an apprentice mechanic myself no offence was meant to any individuals sorry guys
local parts store quoted between 55 and 68 dollars for the part thats already better than most places so yeah guess ill just give it a go
me personally for a CAS id go for a new one as they can be a prick to change HOWEVER.. for 10 bucks ya cant go wrong
as for replaceing it it can be like i said a prick as you have to undo that big bolt on the main pully (harmonic balancer) but there are a few easy ways it can be done like one (not recommended...i havent done it this way but i know of alot of people that have) is to place a spanner on the nut with a breaker bar (long bit of pipe ect..) over the spanner for leverage and jam it in under the subframe of the car then get in and crank the engin ...DO NOT START....may be best to disconnect the spark plug leads from the coil pack (if u do it make sure u know where they go when putting them back on) if its a series one engin then the harmonic balancer should pull off with a bit of force but if its a series 2 you will need a pully to get it off. after the balancer is off then its a matter of changein the sensor.....never changed the sensor on mine but i have had to take the balancer off a number of times
like i said this way is not recommended but its the way most people do it
I had one go on me years ago, didn't know what the problem was- engine would just turn off. I found out what it was when the catalytic convertor became blocked, due to the engine suddenly shutting down in the fashion it did. Cost me a lot more than $60... :(
