ok so a little while ago i had a huge whine from the pump and it became very stiff when turning at low speed, so i decided to get another pump from pick n payless which buggered up after about 3 weeks of use. I then purchased a Re-Con pump with 18 month warranty and fitted it the other day making sure to flush the system properly of old crap fluid. i also fitted a new fan belt to stop slipping and squeeling. i find for the first 5 mins of driving the steering operates normally but from then on the re-com pump is still whineing quite loudly and the steering is still stiffer than it should be.

can anyone give me any hints as to fixing this problem or will i simply have to purchase a new p/s rack?

if so how much would i expect to pay for a rack and is it a tough job to put in yourself?

thanks guys

Thanks Trizo
I have played around with all different fluid levels for a while now and that does not seem to make a difference. When bleeding i had a mate turn the wheel while i fed more fluid into the res for a min or so until the low pressure hose spat out the clear fluid so im assuming everything went fine. As for the air bubble, im not too sure as the front wheels were not raised when bleeding. how should i get rid of an air bubble? is it possible that after a week of driving the bubble will dissapear?

I am planning a drive up the coast in the next few weeks so i need to get this fixed up pronto. has anyone replaced their own steering rack and how much would i be expecting to pay?

thanks heaps

there not cheap and its a bitch of a job, lol... have a look at all you p/s lines and make sure there is not a kink in any of them... also it is quite possible that there other p/s pump u got was shot also! If you have a m8 with a vn and he is feeling genourous , c if you can borrow the pump to c if it was your old 1, alot of stuffing around I know but its cheaper than guessing!

after all the stuffing around im fairly sure its not the pump that is the issue.
Does that mean it has to be the rack that is faulty or is there a power steering box or something which may have screwed up?

verdict is:

all that for just over 600 bucks sounds reasonable considering that the racks are (cheapest i have been quoted) $350... ball joints around 30 each so lets say 60 buxs for 2 and depending on what bushes are being replaced....so yeh sounds like a very good deal seeing that it will also have a wheel alignment and 3 years warranty plus labor.
let us know how it goes

yep and metal particles that could cause potential damage get caught up in it.
I got a new steering rack from pedders for $420 change over with one of those filters. I couldnt tell you what they chrged for labour because I also had new caster bars $126 pair(as mine were straightening out) The GMH castor bars cant competeagainst the Pedders caster bars in a press apparently)also had a tower bar fitted $200 total labour cost $330 with a $89 wheel alighnment total cost of $1172.70.
was well worth it feels tighter then a....ROFL....brand new car

ok well i'll have to ask them about the filter, sounds pretty essential
i was told the reason my rack is fine for the first ten mins is because it isnt until the system heats up and expands that problems occur. so reco should do nicely
and the moral here is: once pedders have found what needs fixing tell them to take a hike cause your guaranteed to get a better price if u look around

I was garenteed to have a fully reco'ed steering rack (no second hand parts.) I went there for a reson service and with no intention of a plug or catch phraze. No bull. I see I have paid for peace of mind that evey part I have replaced on the car has a 2 year warrenty. With Pedders I know I have bought quality if I wanted Sh1t I would have gone to Bursons. I am fairly certain that the parts I have used aside from the nolathane bushes used to rebuild the K frame Which when I replace them I will also by them from Pedders. My preferance by experiance. nothing more nothing less if you find a better product let me know.
