This is my 1st attempt of changing gaskets in any type of Commodore. I have to take off the sump and the book im reading from says that i need to remove the front crossmember i cant find this information in the book only that i need to do it. Could someone please send me a photo or legiable illistration with idiot friendly instructions on how to take off this piece so i can get to the sump. Thank you

If you are reading from a Gregories or similar it will probably redirect you to the suspension section.
I'll have a look at mine when I get home and see if I can sort something out for you- is it a six or an eight? |

Ohhh, watch out for the cast iron flywheel cover with its 2 legs bolting to the sump. If that's there, it will turn into a major pita to take the sump off without lifting the engine out
And you don't need to take the x-member out. You can lift the engine enough to clear the pickup.
It is easier to remove the engine to do it.
And change the welch plugs while your at it. |

| I agree it would be quicker removing the engine. you will prolly rind that the bolts holding the sump in are on top of the sump lip , a real poxy spot if you ask me... At least with the engine out they are easy to get to! |

i replaced all gaskets on me vn while engin was in car......wasnt that fun :P
to do the sump i had all suspension out of car anyway so it was a matter of me undoing the cross member and letting it fall....with engine supported with a metal axle (small axle) across the strut towers....would i do it again???? .......short answer is ..yes i would as it wasn't very hard just time consuming. However mne didn't have the cast iron inspection cover plate, mine had a thin metal on but teh cast iron one is a prick to get on and off lol with the wreck in the yard it was a pain in the ass...lol |

I've not done it myself, but most people I've spoken to recommend dropping the crossmember to get to the sump, rather than lifting the engine.
That's for the V8- not sure how the six is different. |

| theres a special tool that mechanics buy specifically for this reason, its a bar which rests on your strut towers and has a mini crane on the end, it holds/jacks the motor up to do the sump gasket. |
