Hey guys. I did an ECU Check this morning and suprise suprise it gave me code 12!! GGRRRRR!!!! Really cracked it then lol. Decided to disect my motor bit by bit to find possible problem. Dropped water out of the radiator, still every green and clean. Took top radiator hose of and flushed it with clean water, at first the water was dark brown. Attempted to take bottom radiator hose off, what fun that was it was coroded to the pipe it sits on, had green and creamy coloured crap stuck to it which made it very very hard to get off. Flushed that also with clean water, same coloured water came out when that was done. Then moved onto the thermostat. Had dark brown and dark green sludge on it (what is causing this?) then chucked it into a pot full of boiling water. Not sure if it was opening up or not around the underside( the part that sits at the bottom when in the motor) i was looking and seen a gap around the brassy coloured thingy (i dont no what its called lol). The motor appears to be clogged with brown sludgy crap, assuming that is that same stuff they blew out of my radiator. Other half is currently outside pulling motor out as there is quite a bit of oil everywhere wants to check for blown gaskets and whatnot. Any pointers of where to go from here? What else should i be checking and is the brown sludgy stuff my problem?? If so what the bloody hell do i do lol! Cheers guys!

I'd gladly push my holden than drive a bloody ford!

brown sludgy stuff most likely just inlet manifold gaskets i just did a set to day on a car that had the same brown sludge not quite as bad as yours but there was a bit of it

Check the REALLY basic things. I worked for a roadhouse for four years where the temperature hovered near or at 50 degrees in summer. I can tell you that 90% of overheating comes from a clogged radiator, regardless of what coolant is in it. When an engine overheats, rust and shale comes off the water jackets. This gets stuck in the radiator cores, which makes it overheat more. Ignore it and it begins to snowball until something serious happens. In the case of either the 3.8 or 5 litre, it just means they get hot. In alloy head engines, it means blown head gaskets if you push it. Flushing with a hose will get some of this shale out, but not all.

Brown water is dirt in the cooling system which might take anything up to 3 flushes to completely get rid of the crap... now the creamy coloured stuff?? is it a whitish colour?? this may or may not indicate a blown head gasket... if you could investigate and get back to me with some more details that would be great! If you can still start the car, start it then check the oil dipstick if its an odd colour its a good indication there is oil mixing with the water...

Cheers,
Nodg.

If this isn't seen, there is a chemical tester (unsure, ask nodg about it) that will test for the presence of CO or CO2 in your cooling system. Take out your plugs and look for rust too. That would at least tell you which bank is the problem, if it really is that bad.
