Hey guys, When I turn my heater on it stinks of coolant, the smell is coming out of the air vents, even when the fan is off. Also there is a really bad ticking/oil slapping sound coming from the motor which makes it run like ****, but when the noises go away she runs like a dream. There also seems to be a squeak coming from the motor, any ideas? Cheers

The bad news about the coolant smell, is that it's pretty certain your heater core has sprung a leak. Unsure as to how big a job it is to get it out, but if you do, don't fart around with "patching it up." get a recore or reconditioned one.
The "squeak" might be from the idler pulley near the alternator. To be certain of this, give it a squirt of CRC to see if it shuts up. If it does, it means you'll have to replace it soon. I had one seize on me, and the "squeak" quickly becomes a shriek from the burning drive belt when it goes.
As for the ticking noise, is it coming from the top or the bottom of the engine? If it were top end, maybe it's a sticky lifter, but if it's bottom end, I haven't got a clue. |

where bouts is the heater core? I got a new chrome pulley a couple of weeks ago so shouldn't be that. ticking is coming from top of motor I put in VS injectors which quietened it down a lot but the ticking comes and goes. also when I hit 60ks it gets a bad vibration until 70ks. any ideas?? |

If I remember rightly, it's behind the console, more oe less below where the stereo goes in the dash. I can only tell you the initila process of how to get to it. Take out your ashtray, and gently unclip the panel from around the T-bar. Carefully lift it over the T-bar, and you will see some mounting screws behind it on the "bin" part of the centre console. Beyond that, I don't know, because I haven't been there on a VN before.
How's your transmission and tailshaft? Sometimes if the centre bearing or one of the universal joints on the tailshaft is on the way out, vibrations can happen like this, sometimes even if it's just out of balance.
Another source of squeaking may be the alternator bearing. Check anything on the front of the motor that drives a belt, and/or has bearings in it |
