Hi guys new on here and need some help, Last saturday night i was practising a little sideways action when i spun out and hit the gutter on the driver side front wheel. The front wheel is toed in at the bottom pretty bad, what would be bent or broken and what should i replace to totally eliminate the problem. Any ideas would be great as im sure some of you have done similar things.

I would say bent lower control arm would be a fair bet. Then you could have also done damage to the K frame. Jump under and compare lower control arms first you should be able to see a noticeable difference if this is your problem. Go over the whole front end comparing side to side. Let us know how you go Cheers |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

I'd also be checking to see if you damaged the steering rack too. Any noticeable leaks, and whether the bit that attaches to the tie rod is bent. |

Thanks guys, i have checked and it seems like i have bent the lower control arm but also noticed the wheel is toed towards the passenger side also so i guess something to do with the steering rack or tie rods? |

You may have to replace the tie rod. So they tell me, attempting to straighten one with an oxy is not recommended. If you don't have any play in the tie rod ends, get a replacement tie rod for the bent one, and take it to somewhere that does wheel alignments. Without the appropriate equipment, you're making a really vague guess. I've done wheel alignments before, and know what's involved.
Are there any funny noises coming from the rack itself? If so, you might have to ask a power steering place about it. If it's just the tie rod, no problem. 15 minutes on the alignment rack after replacing the bent control arm, and it will be fine. |

Mechknight73, I finally got time to pull it apart yesterday and found the lower control arm to be bent and twisted fairly bad but the tie rod and tie rod end seems straight and healthy. My cousin is a 3rd year apprentice came around and thinks steering rack is ok so hopefully new control arm and a wheel alignment should do the trick. Thanks for the help. |

No problem. With the parts replaced, it's now a simple job of redoing the wheel alignment. Any suspension place that does it should be able to do it in about 20 minutes |

Car is back together and driving straight so wheel alignment will be next week, i took it for a test drive and there is a humming sound coming from the front end mostly above 40km. The sound is very similar to a 4wd with mud tyres on the tar road and i have no idea what it is. |

You didn't happen to see any of the inner guard loose? Remember, they're plastic, but that's the only thing I can think of that would make a sound like that, unless someone else has a better idea. On a VN with big wheels, I could imagine it being a problem that might not be spotted. |

No i cant see anything loose, i only have a set of 15 inch wheels on at the moment so i can see pretty much all under the guard. I thought maybe a wheel bearing or maybe because the car crab walked all the way home my tyres are worn unevenly. |

Switch your spare tyre and see if it makes any difference. Mud tyres make that noise because of a very chunky tread pattern, it may be possible that in crab walking home, you cut a new "tread pattern" on this wheel. As a precaution, check the wheel bearings too. First with the wheel on, and rocking the tyre, to see if there's any play. If there's no "vertical play" i.e. when you shake it from the top of the wheel, it's likely ok. If not, take out the wheel bearings, check them for wear, repack and replace as needed. Make sure the new bearings are tight enough to not have any play in them, but not too tight as to prematurely wear them out |
