Being a newcomer to Victoria, and will have to change to Vic plates soon, how strict is Vic Roads on modifications in general? I'm used to WA licencing being a bunch of killjoys when it comes to almost anything that isn't stock, but if anybody knows the general things I'm not allowed, it would be appreciated

depends on what licence you hold, if you hold a probationay licence (your p's) it will depend on what colour p's your given as to your restrictions, if you get red p's or become a P1 driver, you are only allowed one person in your car between the ages of 16 to 21, your not allowed to drive anything more powerful then a stock 6 cylinder, your not allowed any mechanical modifications which i;ve been told sport exhausts. so pretty much red p's suck balls. Green p's P2 are better you are allowed to drive more powerful cars, but in a commodore you cant drive anything bigger then a 307 or 304 it goes off the power to weight bullcrap. if your full licenced like me then you have nothing to worrie about lol if you want any exact info let me no

I'd gladly push my holden than drive a bloody ford!

I'm HR licenced in WA; means I can legally drive anything not articulated i.e. prime movers, and only if the trailer weighs less than 4.5 tonnes. I WA it's about technical details; no rims wider than 7" for a VB-VS, no lowering more than 2", none of the crazy stuff you could get away with in NSW. I take it Vic Roads has something like a "technical section;" where you could take your "blueprints" of a car, and ask if it's legal. My VN will have not much other than sharpening the suspension, 16" alloys, and maybe a free flow exhaust system. It's my HZ that may give me trouble.

I'm going to build an HZ one tonner, using a VN/VP engine and driveline, with a lumpy cam and a lot of custom bodywork. For example, behind the cab, there will be a mini version of the sleeper cab you see on the back of Kenworths. Its exhaust will be two truck style barrels behind that cab. Its front end will look like a cross between the black Interceptor from Mad Max and a conventional bullbar. I even have an overhead console planned, as somewhere to mount the UHF two way, and several switches. The sleeper cab isn't for sleeping in, it's a stylish way of putting in toolboxes and the spare tyre, as I might consider LPG as well. Playing with the idea of making a 5th wheel trailer, if only I had the space and the money.

That sounds like a mad idea!!! will look good!! I dont think they will really pick on that to tell you the truth, they aren't too fussy where other states are concerned but yeah like i've always said give them a call and ask what you need to do, you might need to get it checked by them, you may not you never know

This has been an idea in my head that has been buzzing around for about 7 years. I was married to an uptight cow whom didn't understand, let alone allow my dream. I'm now with a wonderful woman whom has let me pretty much do what I like in the double garage (she owns her house) so long as I shut the doors.

I owe this car a debt of gratitude. Got it in January 2000 as a trade-in at a car yard I worked at. Rough as guts to look at, but mechanically as reliable as the sun rising and setting. $300 initially, and found $15 in change as I cleaned it out.

For four years, it slept on axle stands in a dust swept shed in the middle of a farm paddock, because quote, "You can only have one car at this house." Arrived ANZAC Day 2004, and slept for all that time. Awoke on Australia Day 2008, and escaped under some very sneaky processes with a tilt tray back to Perth. While it waited for me to leave the ex, it slept in a secure warehouse.

About 6 months after leaving the ex, it joined me in Perth again. I fell in love, and drove it to Merredin, 270km east of Perth. Found that work wasn't as reliable as I thought, and my girlfriend and I moved to Victoria, where her house is. My HZ arrived by truck three weeks later.

Today, it lives side by side with the VN, waiting for me to get out of debt, and get on with the process of rebuilding. The body has terminal cancer, but there are so many parts this car can transfer across. By the way, if any of you need a healthy HZ spec 202, this one still runs fine, ony a stuck lifter to fix. Would make a good base for a speedway engine, as this one seems not to care what you throw at it. A little crank balancing, some porting and a cam to match, and it will serve them well.

I managed to dig deeper into the Vicroads website, and while Victoria is less strict on some things, they are killjoys on others. I find it odd that you actually need a specialised class of licence to put flashing lights on the roof of anything. Would really make it no fun for a farmer moving his silos lol

On the upside, I notice that licencing a vehicle is much more streamlined than it is in WA. They haven't taken the "subcontractor" hint on that one, and you can literally wait all day to get your vehicle inspected for licencing or removing a canary, at only a handful of government inspection centres. Same goes for drivers' licences. I hope to upgrade from HR to HC shortly, and I'm glad I'm doing that in Victoria.
