First, take off your fuel filter and put it on the bench. Cut it open, and see what's inside. There's a good chance it's chockers, so best to replace that. Then, put in a new filter, and turn on the ignition. If your pump is running ok, it should make a very smooth buzzing noise. Does it stall while at x revs, or just does it at random? Those EFI pumps usually fail for two reasons: 1/ running on empty too often and 2/ getting choked up with rust/sediment/whatever. The pump is inside the tank, and there is another mesh filter on the end of the line. If changing the filter makes no difference, then continue down the line until you find the real culprit |

Where would i find the fuel filter is it in the engine bay or near the tank? The cars stops at random times, once while idling than 3 times while driving than once when i pulled up went back to get in the car half hour later and it wouldnt start. I have heard a few funny noises from the fuel pump especially gurgling noises. I will try the filter first and if it doesnt work than i will change the pump. |

The fuel filter is a round metal canister on the fuel line, about a metre or so away from the fuel pickup, under the car. You will need little more than either a screwdriver or a pair of pliers to get it off, but remember to aim it away from you when you take it off, as the line may still have some back pressure in it. This is your cheapest part to replace. Some of the guys will have a better idea of this than me, but it may be unnecessary to unbolt the fuel tank to get at the fuel pickup assembly. There's a good chance there's an inspection plate to get at it, but I'm not sure. If Ford do it, I would be very surprised if VNs don't have them.
When the pickup is out, shine a torch inside the tank, to see if you have rust or other crap in there. If it's just sediment, clean it out. If it's rust, replace the tank. Fuel tanks of the VN's era were made from a type of sheetmetal called terne plate; steel sandwiched between two layers of what is pretty much solder- a tin/lead alloy. It is unusual for the fuel tank to rot out, but if it does, don't stuff around trying to stop the rust. |

Another idea would be to give your throttle body a good clean as the IAC could be covered in carbon. My advice would be to remove it and give the throttle body a good clean inside and out with some throttle body cleaner. |

Shouldn't give any trouble now. If it does, it may mean you have to bleed the injectors, but will cross that bridge when we get to it |

Just remember that changing a fuel filter should be done almost as often as changing an air filter. Cutting it open gives you a snapshot of what's been in your fuel since the last service |

Yeah, i'm atleast changing filter every 30/40k, and when i cut it open it still has gunk and crap in it. Still for about $30 its better than replacing a fuel pump. |

Might pay to take out your tank one day, open the pickup on it, and see what's inside the tank. Depending on where you usually get your fuel from, it might be rust inside the tank, it might well be crappy fuel |
