Hey guys, got a problem with the starter motor in the berlina, I no its on its way out, but have a question regarding it. If its on its way out would this make my car harder to start when it doesnt play up? or would it possibly be something different causing this problem

I'd gladly push my holden than drive a bloody ford!

What do you mean by hard to start??
Do you mean it has trouble turning over or that is turns over but does not want to fire??

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.

If your starter motor is on the way out, one of two things may happen:
1.It seems like your battery is dying too
2.It has trouble engaging the ring gear

If the starter motor is draining enough current from the battery, then it is possible that it's taking away some from the ignition. Remember that on most cars, the positive battery lead goes straight to the starter motor

Mind you, the new starter motors these days use half the current to do the same job. Last on of these modern starters I installed was into a VS V8 Statesman. They sound funny, are about half the size of the one they replace, but have a lot of kick to them

When i start it it sometimes does seem like the battery is going flat, i used to have to put my foot on the accelerator at the same time to get it started but dont need to anymore. When i do try to start it sometimes it makes a horrible sound and wont kick over at all, i have to leave it for a while then try to start it again

At an educated guess, I'd say there's something going really bad with the solenoid. If it's some kind of screeching, grinding kind of noise, your solenoid is likely not throwing the pinion out far enough to engage the teeth on the flywheel ring gear properly. The heat from the effort creates resistance, which would be why it calms down after you let it cool off for a while. As for the actual drive motor itself, the main thing is that the brushes wear out, so it takes more amperage to do the same job it used to. Ditch the starter motor for a new one, and if it's still causing trouble, look at everything in the way to the starter motor on the harness. For some reason a lot of auto sparkys are less interested in reconditioning starter motors, and will want to flog you a new one. Sometimes it's the cheaper option, but not always

There is a possibility also that it could be the battery.

One glance under the cell caps should confirm that one; if there's this sludge between the lead plates, and/or the plates themselves are buckled, that just about confirms it

Hey guys thanks for the suggestions, the battery is brand new so its not that, but the sound that Mechknight described is exactly the sound that it makes!!!! Couldnt figure out a way to describe it but you got it in one! So it is defently a problem with the starter motor? I went to a auto elec place in town and they dont normally do reco starter motors for the vn but they will sell me a brand new one for 143. ALOT cheaper then what I can get from super cheap even with my 25% staff discount!

Sounds a lot like the Ashdown units. My brother asked me to get one for his 186 powered one tonner. They sound like the starter motor on a Hilux, but they do an excellent job
