Hey guys, my radiator is leaking in my vn berlina. I checked the hoses but they are fine so i pulled the radiator out and it seems to be leaking from the bottom where the core meets the end tank. Any one got any ideas? Should i put it back in and try that chemweld stuff or go for a new radiator. $300 for an ebay aluminium one sounds ok. cheers guys

The tanks on these radiators are plastic. Stuff like chemiweld won't work on it. You can ask a radiator place, but they'd probably tell you that the tank should be replaced, if the core's ok.
I know this sounds dodgy, but many years ago, I remember a temporary repair on such a radiator with expoxy putty. The bloke who did it didn't report any problems afterwards, and it happened because he ran over a dead roo in a Honda Integra. Would stress this is a teporary fix, wouldn't recommend leaving it like that |

Thanks mechknight73, the radiator hasnt got plastic end tanks it has a sticker on it saying it was replaced in 2003. I dont think i would go down the road of putty although i have bogged up a large hole in an old hilux radiator before.I think my best option would be a flash aluminium radiator cheers

Is it a steel radiator or alloy and what are the tanks made out of?? |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

Its a brass copper unit, its really hard to see where its leaking. It apperas to be coming from the inside corner of where the end tank joins the core

I guess if you got really stuck you could "borrow" one out of a WB V8. Not a perfect fit but all brass and copper lol. The V8 ones have the outlets the right way round for V6 and V8s |

If the rest doesn't look like it is in bad shape i would be getting it repaired myself. |

I chucked it back in and tried that chem-i-weld and so far so good. Only problem is that with only the water in the radiator it seems to be getting hot. But after a couple of days it should be fine to put coolant back in. Anyway guys thanks and i will let you know how it goes. Seems a cheap fix at $12 |

Remember to clean out the cooling system properly, you'll find that your radiator is clogged up with shale and rust from the block. Whenever an engine gets hot, regardless of what coolant is in it, these little buggers shake loose with heat. Get the engine to operating temp, then drop the bottom hose. If it comes up clean, chmical flush it anyway. Jammed thermostats only cause overheating 10% of the time |

I cleaned it all out and radiator and engine was very clean, its not overheating but the plain water in it just doesnt do the trick. Running temp is normally on the first white line but now its on the next one. I will be dropping the water and putting coolant in it over the next few days. So all will be good hopefully. Cheers

Have you got a V8 in the berlina?? That would explain the steel tanks :)
Cheers |

Believe so yes. I know the 6's have the alloy and plastic and pretty sure the 8's have steel (just to lazy to go out the back and verify :P ) |

If the radiator actually leaks again, sand back the offending area, break out the flux, and solder it up. Until I knew it was a V8, I thought this one was a plastic tank one. Copper and brass can be repaired, plastic is a lot harder |
