Hey Guys, I've noticed lately that when I drive my car a really weird smell comes from it, i cant really tell where from but if you stick your nose in the rear wheel arches you can smell it quite strongly, it smells kind of like burning rubber mixed with something else its really bad, it smells kind of foul, does anyone have any idea on what the hell this is???? I've never smelt this smell in any other vn before lol

I'd gladly push my holden than drive a bloody ford!

There's absolutely nothing obvious stuck on the exhaust? First thought was maybe it's some tar on the exhaust, and as it gets hot, it burns a bit, and makes an awful pong that smells like something burnt. You can also sometimes get this smell if you've run over something dead, and/or killed it in the process e.g. a bird too slow to take off. Check your entire exhaust, and everything surrounding it.

Forgive me if this is asking a stupid question, but you haven't changed your rear handbrake shoes or disc pads lately? I know since they banned asbestos, they make them out of some other compound, and having not changed any pads or shoes since that one came in, I don't know whether the smell when they bed in is any different to the old pad compound.

Funny you ask Mechknight I had all of my brake pads changed last week, and to be quite honest come to think of it I havent noticed this smell since then!!! You may be on to something, but I will still check my exhaust just in case. I smelt in my partner's wheel arches last night when we got home and his smells kind of the same but no where near as strong as my car does. I keep being told not to worry about it cos it's probably nothing but at the same time because I don't know what it is it's making me paranoid that something is wrong with my car

So long as your brakes are ok, it should be fine. Having nursed a lot of sickly cars, I have a mental "hall of weird;" strange things I've seen cars do, and not so strange. So while I'm not a qualified mechanic, I can call on that experience to help me diagnose things.

I mentioned to my assistant manager how you asked me if i had just changed my brake pads, and she said it might be from them not "bedding" my brakes???? Could this sound like a calprate to you???

When you first change a set of pads or shoes, you are meant to "bed" them in by standing on the brakes a bit. The idea is that by heat and friction, it heats the pad contact surface. In a way it "burns" off a small layer from the top. If you drove ound in a lot of stop start city driving, this would happen naturally. If you lived somewhere where you don't have to brake much e.g. a farm, it takes a bit longer. The smell is at its strongest the first time you use the new pads, and will fade over time. It's harmless to the car, just that the pong might be annoying.

Definitely. The smell will fade in time, it's nothing to be worried about. Just get your disc rotors warm as often as possible, and this smell will go away faster

Yep. What you want is a kind of "baking glaze" on the surface of the pads. As you might have noticed, brake pads aren't black when brand new. They get this way from friction, and prolonged use "scorches off" the top layer, leaving the pads with no more that will "burn."

Good to hear. Each model throughout Holden's history has a common "language," a series of symptoms that tell you something. Each individual model speaks a dialect of that language. You've just learned a phrase common to all Holdens; odd pong from the pads = "Bed in my new pads please." lol. Older models speak and even funnier dialect to the VNs; Kingswoods have a collection of odd smells, sounds and movements that only a seasoned owner would understand. All of my cars seem to say "normal" things and not so normal things.
