im my vq i turn the key and its like its in gear but if i use a bit of wire in the starter relay it will start everytime it been doing it on and off for about 6 months now and ive changed the N/switch starter realay computer its not as bad now but still plays up im gonna change the ignition switch next if it plays up still i dont have a clue i know its not the starter motor cos its fine but i got another one there i might change it soon but this might have to do with the fault in my custer so if u got any idears ill give it ago cheers
I'd check your starter motor first, then work your way back from there. You should confirm that it will work ok off the car. Then you look at the terminals on the solenoid, then trace those back to the wiring loom. Find out which wire does turn the starter motor, and check it for voltage. Then you go for relays and switches connected to that circuit.
The ignition switch connected to the lock barrel is easy to get to. Undo the shroud around the column, and the switch connector can be removed from the back of the ignition lock. I would have to look up which wire does what though

so your earthing out the starter motor directly from the relay and it will start without fail, otherwise it will go to turn over but nothing at all? Id be checking your ignition wiring back to the ignition itself, a job that requires an autoelectrition to diagnose quickly and effectively.
