I read that Skyline R31 diff gears fit the VN diff. Im pretty keen on the 3.7 ratio the manual R31 had. Couple of questions though...

Both are definitely 28 spline? and is a R31 LSD a good idea or am I better using a VN LSD center? I read that the R31 ones are known for there weakness?

Any help would be appreciated, I have had nothing to do with diffs but I have a spare sitting here that Im keen to crack open

Just be thankful you got two legs to stand on and hands to grab sh*t with!

Another option which I think il go with if it works. Standard VN 3.08 LSD with Skyline 3.7 gear? Does that bolt straight together?

My understanding of the Skyline diffs is that the VL and '86-'88 Skylines had identical diffs save for the axles bolted to them. Skyline/Pintara back in the day were 4 stud.

Obviously there's adaptor plates involved with fitting one, but if you fit a VL manual's gearbox, have it rebuilt with a Pintara gear set. A mate of mine did this to his VL. The engine was stock internally. It was chipped, had headers and the Pintara gears. When it could get traction down, it could do a high 12 quarter mile.

Yes the centre's are the same and yes you can just get the r31 gears and fit to VN LSD centre

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer?
Understeer is when the driver is scared.
Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.

My stock lsd is sitting in the workshop as we speak getting a full rebuild/shim/lap and change to 3.91 ratio with spool :) I bought a crown wheel and pinion off ebay that was out of a R31 skyline automatic, the manual r31 was a bit rarer so might be harder to find... Do you have an auto or manual? 'the net' suggests 3.7 for a t5 manual or 3.9 for a th700 automatic and reports for these combinations are good & consistant. Apparently your rpm @ 100KM/H will be about 600rpm higher with 3.9 gears... As for the lsd, if your into skids a stock lsd wont last long, mine is/was still holding up strong but if you want maximum traction in a straight line go a spool but they are illegal and a bit dangerous on the wet if your not used to it. could sell you my old lsd centre if you want lol?

Cheers,
Nodg.

You a 6 or an 8? What sorta k's you getting out of a tank? Anythings helpful really, like what speed you get out of 1st 2nd etc. I don't want driving daily to become a hassle as I stop at every petrol station I pass and change gear 3 times to get to the end of the driveway

Just used this handy tool here

http://www.kabamus.com/garage/gears.html#gearspeeddata

3.9's are pretty tempting ay, seems to make f all difference at 100k (well 1200rpm or something) but I can live with that for the exrta up and go

my car is a v6 5sp with 3.89 diff gears. 2500rpm at 100kmh still not that bad on the freeway and easier to drive in traffic. if your concerned about fuel economy then don't expect to have a fast car and don't thrash the one you got.

the standard r31 lsd is horrible. they are pretty much the first thing to die in a silo. either they stop locking very fast or the pinion bearing ****s its self. kaaz makes a decent lsd but they go for about $1200.
