Let's review the differences between an S2 VN and a VR. Cam, heads, injection, wiring harness and ignition mapping. It's a pity you don't have a VR engine harness and a VN one to put side by side, so you could see the specific differences. Is it that it idles too low, or just idles as though you've got a vacuum leak?
Supposedly the VR had no actual difference in either memcal or ECM between auto or manual. Check for anything stupid, like vacuum leaks you might have missed, before stripping anything. It could be something as small as a vacuum line going to a heater control.
There is something else I remember. Speak to Gardner Engineering. The VR ECM taps into what's known as the body computer; it is meant to report on faults other than the engine, such as dud switches, blown bulbs, and something to do with the transmission. Gardner make conversion kits for early Commodores and Kingswoods, to take VN-VS V6 and V8 engines. On the VR kit, they mention a "body computer simulator;" a plug to "blank off" that function. They also sell off the shelf idler pulleys to do away with either the power steering or aircon drives. They might give you a simple answer, they may not, but no harm in asking. |

I know the VR autos have more "electronic management" than the VN. Is it possible to strip the VN harness, and just fit it to the VR V6? It might be possible to get a manual VR management chip to fool the engine computer into thinking it's a VN motor |

it's definitely a mess. Drastic measure, but how hard is it to put VN heads on a VR block? |

I'd grab the harness that came with it, just to be sure. As much of the harness as you can get your hands on |
