Uh...6x9's and cutting metal...if they are mounted in the rear parcel shelf I hope you realise that you've just made your car unroadworthy and you can get a canary for that.

I've warned enough people in enough threads that even a little bit of forum browsing would have shown you at least one thread with a warning in it.

It is illegal to remove any metal from the parcel shelf of the car as it is deemed to weaken the structural integrity of the vehicle. If you get caught (and I know a few people who have), it's a fairly costly exercise to repair/replace the shelf, then you need an engineers certificate. I wouldn't plan on selling the car for a long time, you shouldn't be able to get a roadworthy with that in place (you might get it through, but I doubt it).

Do me, and every other commodore owner a favour, go and smack your friend over the head. He may have just done something that will cost you several hundred dollars to repair.

As for the problem with the amp cutting out, there's a few possibilities. First up, check the earth connection from the amp to the body of the car, it should be less then 1m long, it should go to clean metal (ie. without paint), and be held in place by quite a nice bolt.

Check the RCA connections, both at the amp and the back of the h/u. A loose RCA can cause your problem, as well as fry the pre-amp board in the h/u.

If the amp is mounted upside down, smack your friend in the head twice, amps don't like being mounted upside down, they get too hot. Standing it on its side is okay, lying it flat the way it was designed to run is even better.

If you and your friend just bolted it all in and didn't adjust any of the settings on the amp, you should both get a smack in the head. You'll need to tune the amp in to the speakers. It should be written out fairly clearly in the instruction book that comes with it (doesn't matter what the amp is, they all come with basic instructions).

Most importantly, what is the power rating of the speakers, and what is the power rating of the amp? I'm not interested in MAX power, I want to know NOMINAL power (or RMS power), it's possible that the speakers and the amp won't work together without serious tuning of the amp.

Lastly, what brand is all this stuff?

well the head unit is JVC and i think the model which says on the book is KD-G205 the ampis a COUSTIC and i think the model is400S its a 2 channel amp and for the speakers its a pioneer which also is in the front which is a 4inch speaker in the dash. ive checked all that and the earth wire is mounted behind the seat wich my friend sanded off all the paint its up to bare metal and a new bolt the ap is mounted facing upwards near the back seat meaning its lying down and for the rca cable i took my cd player and found the dick ass lol wired right to left and left to right lol so ive changed that and the real speakers r steal turning off wen i have it played for bout 5minutes now for the adjusting the amp i dont think my friend adjusted it and i dont really understand after reading the booklet a hundred times to how to adjust it cos i dont understand the power figures wat they mean and all that. since i told u the models of the stuff would u by any change know if not thanx anyways ill probly have to take it to to autobarn or somthing b4dn xxxx

I would take it to some professionals and get them to do it, that way if it s@#ts itself again they will have to fix it... unless ofcourse its the actual gear, and i think JVC and Pioneer are fairly decent. Oh and power figures should all be written on the box...

To tune the amp into the system, pick a nice loud track (for the speakers at the rear, find something with a good deal of bass).

Find the 'gain' control on the amp, turn it right down
Turn the head unit on, and turn the volume up until the front speakers start to clip (you'll be able to hear it because they will sound like they are cutting out on big bass thumps), turn the head unit down until the speakers no longer clip.

Start slowly adjusting the gain on the amp, turning it up until the rear speakers start to clip (you'll be able to see it because the cones will reach the limit of their travel and seem to 'sieze' in place). Turn the gain down until it no longer clips.

That's how you should go about it. Then you'll need to remember to not turn it up any louder than that, otherwise you'll end up frying your speakers and maybe your amp as well.

If you're uncertain about it, take it to somewhere that knows their stuff, it could just be that the amp is pooing itself after 5 minutes of running and that you'll need a new amp. There might be a dodgy connection somewhere...who knows.

Depends how much they have to do, if it was just a tune of the system, it would take them about 5 minutes, and cost bugger all.

If you want them to work out what's going on, it could take them an hour or so, and depending what they have to do, could cost you a lot.
